Kirin : Nǐ zhīdào tā shì shéi ma ?
光芒: Bù zhīdào . Tā shì shuí ?
Kirin : Tā zài zhèlǐ shì hěn yǒumíngde rén .
亞當: Hmmn…感興趣。 Kirin現在將讀每條線為我們-在她以後請重覆。
Kirin : Nǐ zhīdào tā shì shéi ma ?
Bù zhīdào . Tā shì
shéi?
Tā zài zhèlǐ shì hěn yǒumíngde rén .
Adam: Alright, so let’s start with the first line:
Kirin: Nǐ zhīdào tā shì shéi ma?
Adam: So we have a couple of new words here. The first word is the verb zhīdào . That’s a high tone and a falling tone and is the verb “to know.” Very useful word to know. So here we have:
Kirin: Nǐ zhīdào tā shì shéi ma?
Adam: What does tā mean? Tā can mean “he” or “she.” Now usually when you refer to a “he” or a “she,” there is some context involved – either someone you were previously talking about, or someone you are pointing to perhaps. In this dialogue, she is pointing at a woman, so tā here is a woman. We then have the verb “to be” shì followed by a new word shéi . That’s a rising tone and is a new question word meaning “who.” We know this is a question by the ma at the end. So putting it all together gives us “Do you know she is who?”
Kirin: Nǐ zhīdào tā shì shéi ma?
Adam: Or “Do you know who she is?”
Kirin: Nǐ zhīdào tā shì shéi ma?
Adam: The man then replies:
Adam: So what do you think bù zhīdào means? It means “I don’t know.” The “I” here is left out since it’s obvious from context. He then asks:
Adam: That’s a question since shéi is a question word asking “who.” So in this case – “Who is she?”
Adam: Now Kirin is from the south and Ray is from the north, so they have different ways of saying shéi. Listen to Ray say it again:
Adam: So Kirin says it as shéi and Ray says it as shuí .
Adam: The woman then replies:
Kirin: Tā zài zhèlǐ shì hěn yǒumíngde rén .
Adam: Hmmn… let’s see if we can figure this one out. We’ve actually seen all these words before. Tā zài zhèlǐ – what does zài zhèlǐ mean? It means “to be located here.” We then have shì hěn yǒumíngde rén . What does hěn mean? It means “very.” We then have yǒumíngde . What does the verb {translate_2:yǒu mean? It means “to have.” We’ve seen {translate_2:míng before in the word míngzi . What does míngzi mean? It means “name.” And lastly what does rén mean?
It means “person.” So can you guess what a yǒumíngde rén or “has name person” is? It means “a famous person.” Yǒumíngde rén . As in someone who has made a name for themselves. So knowing what we know, the translation of this line is now “She located here is very famous person.”
Kirin: Tā zài zhèlǐ shì hěn yǒumíngde rén .
Adam: Or “She’s a very famous person here.”
Kirin: Tā zài zhèlǐ shì hěn yǒumíngde rén .
Adam: The Premium notes for this lesson show you some other adjectives and words that can be constructed using vocabulary we have already learned giving you a grander picture of how this language works, so be sure to check them out when you have a chance. We’ll listen to the part 2 of this dialogue in our next lesson. For now though, let’s get Kirin to repeat each line for us again. Please repeat after her:
Kirin: Nǐ zhīdào tā shì shéi ma?
Bù zhīdào . Tā shì shéi?
Tā zài zhèlǐ shì hěn yǒumíngde rén .
Adam: Great, and we’ll now listen to Ray and Kirin do the dialogue for us one more time at normal speed.
Kirin: Nǐ zhīdào tā shì shéi ma?
Ray: Bù zhīdào . Tā shì shuí?
Kirin: Tā zài zhèlǐ shì hěn yǒumíngde rén .
Adam: Alright, thank you. As always, please review this material on our website, ChineseLearnOnline.com as we will be reusing it in later lessons. The Premium section has been reorganized recently to give you more review options and more control over which aspects of the lesson you would like to focus on, so be sure to spend some time there and then join us for our next lesson real soon.
Kirin: Xièxie dàjiā . Zàijiàn .
