  3. John McGeough Says:

Hello Adam, could you explain the use of 的in the following sentence:

所以 矮 是高的相反 So “ǎi” (short) is the opposite of “gāo” (tall) .

I understand the meaning, but 的is usually followed by a noun, which is not the case here, I think.
    Should another “de” be used?
It’s a simple sentence that has me confused!

  4. Adam Says:

    Hi John,

In the sentence: 所以 矮 是高的相反, the literal translation would be:
So short is tall’s opposite. “Opposite” here is the noun.

    Does that help?

  5. John McGeough Says:

Hello Adam, I am getting there. Do you mean that “opposite”, an adjective, can be used as a noun? So the sentence could read “short is tall’s opposite meaning?

  6. Adam Says:

    Hi John,

Sorry for not replying earlier. Yes that is correct. “Short is tall’s oppposite”.
