Can anyone elaborate on the use and/or need of “hui” in the sentence “N nǐde gōngzu hu l nǐ jiā hěn yuǎn ma?”. I would have thought the sentence would be fine without the “hui4″. Does it add some element or suggest a future tense as hui4 often seems to do?

  2. Bryan Hassler Says:

In addition, can anyone shed some light on “dou1 hui4″ in “B ti yuǎn, kěsh zǎoshng pngchng dōu hu sāichē, suǒyǐ wǒ dōu yo hěn zǎo qǐ chung.”? Thanks.

  3. Adam Says:

Bryan, for point 1 above, you are right that the sentence could function just fine without the hui4. The hui4 in this case could function as a future tense as in the following:

“N nǐde gōngzu l nǐ jiā hěn yuǎn ma?” (Is your work far from your house?)
“N nǐde gōngzu hu l nǐ jiā hěn yuǎn ma?” (Is your work going to be far from your house?)

For point 2 above, the dōu in “zǎoshng pngchng dōu hu sāichē, suǒyǐ wǒ dōu yo hěn zǎo qǐ chung” functions as “all” and “always” respectively, giving us “there is usually traffic all morning, so I always have to wake up early.” We get the above meanings by combining dōu with other verbs such as “dōu hu” (always will be) and “dōu yo” (always have to)

    Hope that helps!

Thanks, Adam. That helps clear things up. Your explanations have been very helpful.
