  1. Bryan Hassler Says:

Can anyone elaborate on the use and/or need of “hui” in the sentence “Nà nǐde gōngzuò huì lí nǐ jiā hěn yuǎn ma?”. I would have thought the sentence would be fine without the “hui4″. Does it add some element or suggest a future tense as hui4 often seems to do?

  2. Bryan Hassler Says:

In addition, can anyone shed some light on “dou1 hui4″ in “Bú tài yuǎn, kěshì zǎoshàng píngcháng dōu huì sāichē, suǒyǐ wǒ dōu yào hěn zǎo qǐ chuáng.”? Thanks.

  3. Adam Says:

Bryan, for point 1 above, you are right that the sentence could function just fine without the hui4. The hui4 in this case could function as a future tense as in the following:

“Nà nǐde gōngzuò lí nǐ jiā hěn yuǎn ma?” (Is your work far from your house?)
“Nà nǐde gōngzuò huì lí nǐ jiā hěn yuǎn ma?” (Is your work going to be far from your house?)

For point 2 above, the dōu in “zǎoshàng píngcháng dōu huì sāichē, suǒyǐ wǒ dōu yào hěn zǎo qǐ chuáng” functions as “all” and “always” respectively, giving us “there is usually traffic all morning, so I always have to wake up early.” We get the above meanings by combining dōu with other verbs such as “dōu huì” (always will be) and “dōu yào” (always have to)

    Hope that helps!

  4. Bryan Hassler Says:

Thanks, Adam. That helps clear things up. Your explanations have been very helpful.

  5. Judith Malafronte Says:

    Hi Adam,

My progress reports for multiple choice flashcard tests have all disappeared! Also I’d like to test lessons 1 - 120, but it only gives words from lesson 120, also some of them appear in traditional characters both in the question AND in the answer. Curious.

  6. Adam Says:

    Hi Judith,

I’ll look into why the progress report is not updating. I have a feeling we may lose your old reports though, sorry.

I’ve fixed the character problem with lesson 120. Since each test only has 10 questions, if there are less than 10 questions from the current lesson, then the remaining questions will be filled from earlier lessons. If there are 10 or more questions from the current lesson then all questions will be from the current lesson. It looks like lesson 120 has 9 questions (I deleted one of the old ones).

Please continue to let me know if you notice any glitches like this.
