    Hi Marion,

    Thanks for your comment. In order to have the resources to continue developing this course, I unfortunately have to leave some content on the Premium side. Some would argue that I already give too much away for free by providing the Pinyin transcripts, which most other sites charge for.

    The last few lessons are meant to prepare you for the level 3 format which will see more Chinese being used within the lesson, that may go untranslated. The idea here is to only use material that was taught before - giving you multiple ways to review it. I don’t expect this to be easy for most users, but it is necessary to progress you to the next level. I’m hoping the review tools that are constantly being added to the Premium side will help in this area.

    Please continue to leave your comments as they really help me direct this course.

    It’s nice to have these reviews every once in a while. I think these two dialogues using previously learned vocabulary in a new way serve the review function well. Being able to do this is one of the advantages of having a progressive course. A non-progressive approach wouldn’t be able to offer such a review as it wouldn’t recognize the concept of previously learned vocabulary. There wouldn’t even be a “previously learned” and “next up” concept. So this progressive approach is really working for me. On the other hand, I have to agree with Marion that I would also probably be lost without the premium features, such as the complete transcript with its mouseover translations, 4 modes of translation, and one-click integration with the Word Bank. This is the kind of feature integration that makes studying efficient and effective.

    Luobot, well said. The reviews are not only helpful, but a joy to work through after following the course to that point. The premium podcasts that go with them have been especially useful to me this time, because although I have understood the dialogues and the lesson materials, these extras give me more ways to make it sink in deeper. I think we’re going to have to pull our socks up for Level Three, and I want to be prepared! :-)

    Another advantage to having a progressive course is that the teacher always knows what we can and can’t do, and a good teacher can use that knowledge to provide material that’s just right, every time.

    Luobot, do you really think we should be letting people know about how much stuff subscribers get and how it’s all integrated to suit any of our different learning styles? I thought that was our little secret. Anyone who sees what we can do from a simple podcast thinks we’re geniuses, but if they find out how much well designed help we’ve had from the site, and how it comes in easy little pieces that grow onto each other, I’m afraid our super-student status will be hard to maintain.

    Does the word for body really change from shen1 to sheng4 when used to make “shèngshàng” or is this a typo? Both a tone change and an additional g? Thanks for the great review.

    It was indeed a typo that has since been fixed, thanks. The shēn shàng (on your body) was being confused with shèng xià (left over).

    I think there’s another typo still. It shows “Suo3yi3 sheng4xia1″ in the second use of sheng4xia4 in the numbers version of the dialogue.

    Can anyone explain the use of the word ‘dou’ in the sentence “Nǐ zuìjìn dōu zài zuò shénme?” from dialogue 1? I understand it to usually mean ‘all’ or ‘even’ which doesn’t seem to fit here.

    What’s the best way to explain the use of bi3jiao4 in “Suǒyǐ nǐ jīntiān bǐjiào xiǎng yào mǎi shénme?” There is no object for comparison as in common usage and there is no “hao3″ after to suggest preference. Is it functioning here to mean something like “rather”. Sorry, don’t mean to overanalyze this, but it’s a little confusing. The fact that it works differently and is at the end of the sentence in “Wǒ bù zhīdào gāi mǎi nǎ jiàn bǐjiào hǎo” in an earlier part of the dialogue isn’t helping matters either :-)

    Bryan, you are right that dou1 means all. In the case of “Nǐ zuìjìn dōu zài zuò shénme?” it can be roughly thought of as meaning “how have you been spending ‘all’ your time recently?” You can also see it being used in the answer to this question: “Wǒ zuìjìn dōu zài máng xué Zhōngwén.” “Recently, I’ve been busy spending ‘all’ my time studying Chinese.”

    For your second question, the lady only has a bit of money left, so she can’t buy everything she wants. Therefore she has to choose what she “bǐjiào xiǎng yào mǎi” (what she wants to buy more). For example, if she has two items to choose from, she might say:

    “Wǒ liǎngge dōu xiǎng mǎi, kěshì wǒde qián bú gòu, suǒyǐ wǒ bǐjiào xiǎng yào mǎi zhè yíge.”
    (I want to buy both, but I don’t have enough money, so I (more) want to buy this one).
