  3. Edward Sanderson Says:

In the Podcast Review, the question “There are many delicious things to eat here” is translated as “Zhèlǐ you yǒu hěnduō hǎochī de”. I don’t understand why there are two ‘you’s here?

  4. Luise Says:

Hi Edward. The extra “you” is a typo as it doesn’t match the audio. Thanks for pointing it out!

  5. Sven Schwarz Says:

I have a small problem with understanding when to use the 的 at the end of an ADJECTIVE.
So, for example: I guess 这个中国菜很好吃 is already a correct sentence (correct me if I’m wrong), but what about adding an additional 的 at the end, like in 这个中国菜很好吃的 ?

From some grammar studies in the past, I’d say, that this is past tense, saying, that the food WAS tasty. But sometimes I find an additional 的 next to adjectives - so, they are already adjectives! Is it just for the sound of speach? I mean, from what I know now (which is not really much), chinese sometimes add particles just “for fun” or just for a “matter of taste”…

Sorry, I hope, my question really helps and does not even foster more confusion ;-)

  6. Luise (admin) Says:

    Hi Sven,

There are a few ways to add 的 to an adjective. Normally, if the adjectives comes before the noun it is describing, then we use 的, whereas if it is at the end of the sentence we don’t. For example:

    这个地方很热 vs 这是一个很热的地方

    我的妈妈很漂亮 vs 我有一个漂亮的妈妈

    小狗很可爱 vs 可爱的小狗

However, it is possible to use 的 at the end when combined with a 是 earlier on. For example:

    这件衣服是姐姐买的

    他的中文是在网路上学的

    哥哥是昨天去英国的

Let me know if that helps!

  7. Sven Schwarz Says:

    Thanks a lot, Luise!

    Very good examples!

Aha, so, I can not / should not say: 这个菜很好吃
Without the 的 it is wrong / bad?

  8. Luise (admin) Says:

    Hi Sven,

Actually, 这个菜很好吃 is correct. If you wanted to add a 的, you would have to say 这个菜是很好吃的 or 这是很好吃的菜. Note that the meaning of these last two statements is a little different. The first emphasizes the tasty aspect of this dish, while the second is just describing the dish, that happens to be tasty. Hope that makes sense!

  9. Sven Schwarz Says:

That definitely makes a lot of sense! Great reply. Thanks a lot, Luise!
