    I have a question.

I have used zhi1 as a measure word for dog and got away with it, I have also been strongly corrected to tiao2 (why, as dogs have nothing in common with snakes or rivers etc.).

I am pretty sure that I have also seen zhi1 used for xiao3gou3 (puppy) and tiao2 used for dog in the same source.

What is it about dogs that justifies the measure word tiao2 and is it consistent or regional?

  2. admin Says:

Tiáo is used for “long, twisty” things. Fish seem to be in that category so it’s a loose definition that could be extended to dogs as well. I’ve seen both tiáo and zhī used for dogs so it could be a regional preference. Thanks for bringing it up!

Maybe they use tiao2 in regions where dogs have long wriggly tails ;)
