    Hello

In this lesseon and in your introduction you are using the following sentence, can you please explain the word yi1qi4de. How do you translate that word

    J1n1 tian1 gen1 women3 yi1qi4de di2er4ge lao3 sh13 sh13 = today the second teacher with us is.

  2. Adam Says:

Yīqí means “together” and is frequently used with “gēn” (with). So in your example above the literal translation would be “Today with us together’s second teacher is” Does that help?

  3. Luís Romão Says:

I quite like this new lesson format :)

Btw, what exactly is the difference between 开始 and 上 as they both mean “to start”?

In the lesson exercises you can find the sentence “你什么时候开始上班?” which would literally mean something like “When do you start the beginning of work?” Maybe 上 is only used in compound words?

  4. Adam Says:

    Hi Luís,

Actually 上班 can also be though of as meaning “to be at work” while 下班 would be “to be off work”. So in that sense, the sentence could literally mean “When do you start to be at work?” 上课 (to be in class) has a similar usage.

    Hope that helps.

  5. Rie Says:

    Hi Adam,

There is an error in character game7. The character 歡 is shown when you chose simplified mode instead of 欢. Also the sound is qian to my ears, not huan. But as it appears in the same game as 迎 I suppose it is meant to be 欢 as in 欢迎. I think the character game is a great way to learn to distinguish different tones! But it is annoying that the game will tell you that you are wrong when you pick 道 for the sound of daò. There is no way to know that the computer is “thinking” of 到 which is pronounced the same (or the other way around). They should both be correct. The same problem occurs with other characters as well. Could you please fix this? But all in all, I must say, I am very impressed with your course!

  6. Luise (admin) Says:

    Hi Rie,

    I think you’re confusing the 歉 from 抱歉 with 欢 / 歡 from 欢迎.
I see what you mean about the multiple characters with same tone issue. We’ll look into a fix for that.

Thanks - and keep sending us feedback like this!
